Opening Thoughts

So this is my foray into writing. Not that I haven’t attempted writing before (mostly thought without action), but this attempt is much more official. I remember enjoying writing as a child quite a bit, and usually throughout the day I will get sudden bursts of thought that I rarely write down.

I’ll be real plain. The ideas I plan to share in these posts will be almost exclusively about God, His word, His will, and my experiences following Him. I’m a fairly purposeful person. I usually ask the question “why?”about everything I do. If I can’t give a good answer, than I don’t see the point in the pursuit. And for me, God is the biggest answer to every question of “why?”

He is the “why” behind what we do, who we are, why we’re here, how we live. If God doesn’t fit in the “why” of what I do, than the inevitable question I ask myself is “why am I even doing this?”

Purpose is really important to me, and Jesus answers that question in the biggest way possible. It’s why I’m writing now, it’s why I even created this site at all. Part of the reason I delayed in creating this site is because I wasn’t interested in the vanity of a “blog.” Sometimes I find myself silently judging people (you do it too) who shamelessly promote themselves, but that’s not why I’m doing this. I’m doing this because I want to promote Him, and more specifically because I believed He asked me to.

I invite you to join me in exploring more of God in these posts. The irony is that you find yourself. When you seek Him, He ends up fulfilling you; and this is what Jesus said would happen.

24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? – Matthew 16:24-26

I have found there to be nothing more exciting than getting to work with the Holy Spirit everyday. He is my friend, my teacher, my guide. Draw close to Him, and He will draw close to you. Nothing is out of reach when you follow God, and the most wonderful exchange takes place when you give up your will to do His – you find that trusting Him with your future was the best investment you could have made for yourself.

Richard ministers regularly at Great Commission Church in Marshalltown, IA. He and his wife, Natalie, have three awesome kiddos - Joshua (6), Marshall (4), and Kaitlyn (1).
